Bean Market’s August subscription featured Santa Isabel, Guatemala from Rumble Coffee Roasters.
DETAILS OF SANTA ISABEL:
Santa Isabel is a family farm that was founded in 1875. It is owned by Luis Valdés (who has been running the farm since 1961), and managed by his son Luis.
Luis employs over 40 permanent workers throughout the year, and 500 temporary workers during the harvest season. Although it is generally difficult to secure labour during harvest, Luis has been successful in consistently doing so, despite their insistence of selective picking.
Not only do they pay fairly, but they also harvest up to 160 pounds of cherries per day, which means that many of the workers come back each year during harvest.
The gentle, constant rainfall allows for a long harvest from November to March. Luis’ insistence on quality means pickers can do up to 10 passes (pickings) to ensure that only the ripest cherries are selected.
Santa Isabel has produced numerous highly placed Cup of Excellence Coffees, it placed 8th in the 2011 Cup of Excellence, and 3rd in the 2012 Cup of Excellence.
Three friends, Joe, Matt and Stan, started Rumble Coffee Roasters. They had all been in the coffee industry for years and Rumble was created to reflect the high quality beans they roast, as well as their love and respect for coffee.
I’ve spoken to them on numerous occasions and really admire their appreciation to learn more about coffee, and teach those who are interested in learning more.
If you’re around Flemington at 3pm on a Friday, head over to their Roastery and join in on a cupping session. No need to RSVP, just show up. Every Friday there’s something new to learn and a beer to kick off the weekend too.
Sweet orange, red apple, plum acidity and maple syrup finish.
